Banana Boys Podcast

Something I've noticed that's become increasingly more common is people differing from the path that's expected of them. During high school, but more specifically our junior and senior years, the question everyone asks is where are you going to college. This question could take different forms such as what do you plan on studying in university, are you going to a school in state or out of state, or what schools are you applying to. Hearing this over and over again makes you feel like college is something that you have to do, like going to high school. On a completely different side you start to hear people saying that college doesn't matter anymore or it's a waste of money, which are two things all college students hate hearing. It's hard to block out the noise because eventually you start to doubt and question the choices you've made. Something that I've found that's beneficial is hearing from other people about the path they've chosen for themselves.

Banana Boys podcast is hosted by Andrew Lee and Jayden Lee, and no they aren't related. Andrew and Jayden are two Asian Canadian friends in their early twenties. Andrew is studying psychology at the University of British Columbia but took a gap year and, Jayden didn't go to college and works a nine to five job. This dynamic is important because both Andrew and Jayden as well as the listeners can hear two different perspectives. Aside from being a full time student, Andrew is also into photography and videography, and has a following on TikTok. Jayden is into fitness and works an office job and says that even though it's boring he's fine with that because he didn't go to University for it. Jayden continues on to say that the only way he would be disappointed is if he worked hard for four years in school only to get a job where he feels dissatisfied. Their discussions usually revolve around topics such as having a high enough work ethic in their day to day lives, consistently, going after what you want, and just any other topics that the listeners might send in. Something else that makes this duo stand out is that both of them as well as their guests are Asians living in an area of Vancouver where most people are predominantly Asian. I always enjoy hearing about how growing up is like for people of different cultures and nationalities. Andrew and Jayden don't consider themselves influencers, they both have jobs and enjoy posting content on social media. This podcast may sound a bit serious, but the discussions are presented in a way that makes what the hosts are saying feel relatable and leave me looking forward to the next episode. Whether you're starting university, taking a gap year, preparing to graduate, or working in a career you enjoy that didn't require a college education, I think the one thing we can agree on is to trust in your decisions and follow your own path.

  1. This podcast does sounds like it could give me a new perspective on the effect of education and different cultures. It can be difficult to find ways to get the whole grasp on another way of living and I think the form of podcasts can allow for the hosts to have extensive discussions on the topics so everyone is tuned in. It is important, especially as college students, to be aware of the system we are in and what the outside world faces. I'll have to check it out!
